Another weekend [Nov. 23rd, 2009|01:06 pm]

[Current Mood | accomplished]

And another drenching, honestly North West England right now is horrendous, North East isn't much better (Got back to Sheffield this morning) but Bolton/Manchester is truly ridiculous, I mean I know Lancs is supposed to be wet, but not to the extent you need a canoe to go anywhere!

Still not as bad as Cumbria in the North West....sheeesh horrendous, with sympathies to the family of the Policeman killed in the floods there :-/

Consequently spent the vast majority of my visit to Bolton/Manchester indoors once again in good company and being gradually introduced into a whole new world of psychology students, roller skating and weird philosophical discussions at 3am.....(No I wasn't drinking!)

Catch up with you all laters.....Nose back to the grindstone ;-)

What is your proudest life accomplishment so far and why?

This one is easy, although I suspect my proudest accomplishment doesn't stack up to other peoples, it is however mine and mine own alone accomplishment..

Getting my MSc in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Aberdeen in 1994, 1 year of sheer bloody hell but worth it :D

Hope this helps explain my take of Atheism [Nov. 13th, 2009|03:38 pm]
[Current Location |Sheffield]
[Current Mood | contemplative]

Socrates (c. 471–399 BCE), was accused of impiety (see Euthyphro dilemma) on the basis that he inspired questioning of the state gods. Although he disputed the accusation that he was a "complete atheist", saying that he could not be an atheist as he believed in spirits.

See the wikipedia page on atheism for more details under the classical antiquity section http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism.. And for all the other wonderful examples of atheism.

Nice to know my view point is shared by such a historical figure...apart from the fact that I DO describe myself as a "complete atheist" where as he doesn't...

Been a while since I've done one on here rather than elsewhere, time to remedy that:

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken

Would you rent or buy the home of your dreams if a brutal murder had taken place there? What if you got to live there rent-free? Would you think twice if neighbors warned you that it was haunted?

Damned right I would! Rent-free, wheres the problem here? Ghosts? Now do you see the benefits of being atheist? ;-) lol

Meh history is history, I know some of you on here would disagree.....but after all this is my journal ;-)

What a weekend!! [Nov. 9th, 2009|01:35 pm]
[Current Location |Sheffield]
[Current Mood | accomplished]

Had a much needed break this weekend,

With the Friday off work I headed over to Bolton to be picked up and then driven to Cumbria for a weekend of rambling/fell walking with friend Mik as it was his birthday and wanted it celebrated quietly!

Well given the weather at the weekend half the walking was cancelled, we only managed Harter fell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harter_Fell,_Eskdale) in the Duddon/Eskdale valley and skipped Ulpha fell.

We did manage to stop off at Hardknott pass and see the Roman fort (2nd time for me!) and the three shire stone
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Shire_Stone_(Lake_District).
(before escaping the rain to a nearby Inn..http://www.woolpack.co.uk/)

Back yesterday happy if soggy, today legs are aching like crazy but still have a grin on my face..

Ttfn folks :-)

Remember remember the 5th of November [Nov. 5th, 2009|08:14 pm]
[Current Location |Sheffield]
[Current Mood | happy]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes_Night

Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot!
A stick or a stake for King James' sake
Will you please to give us a fagot
If you can't give us one, we'll take two;
The better for us and the worse for you!

Another piece of popular doggerel:

Guy, guy, guy
Poke him in the eye,
Put him on the bonfire,
And there let him die

sung by children in Lancashire whilst begging "A Penny For The Guy":
Remember, remember the fifth of November
It's Gunpowder Plot, we never forgot
Put your hand in your pocket and pull out your purse
A ha'penny or a penny will do you no harm
Who's that knocking at the window?
Who's that knocking at the door?
It's little Mary Ann with a candle in her hand
And she's going down the cellar for some coal
This is a South Lancashire song sung when knocking at doors asking for money to buy fireworks, or combustibles for a bonfire (known as "Cob-coaling"), there are many variations,

this is a shorter one:
We come a Cob-coaling for Bonfire time,
Your coal and your money we hope to enjoy.
Fal-a-dee, fal-a-die, fal-a-diddly-i-do-day.
If you don't have a penny a ha'penny will do.
If you don't have a ha'penny, then God bless you.

have a good 'Un folks....stay safe :D
